Decodable readers are an effective tool for supporting early or struggling readers. They enable a student to apply letter/sound relationships in controlled way, but with the feel of an authentic text. So why and how can decodable sentences fit into the mix?
Why use decodable sentences?
- direct application of phonics skills
- opportunity for immediate feedback
- quick practice, time saver
- opportunity for fluency/phrasing practice
- opportunity for improved reading after feedback and repeated readings...building confidence in finding success
- simple practice for partner reading or family engagement
How can you use decodable sentences effectively?
- first, directly instruct letter/sound relationships and any needed high frequency words
- model using decoding reading strategies and what to do when faced with an unknown word
- next, "I do, we do, you do" with one sentence
- then, support each student as they apply the modeled decoding strategies to read sentences
- provide feedback and use reminders to help support students as they work to decode words and decipher text
