Happy Chinese New Year!
We had a lot of fun today celebrating Chinese New Year in the first grade. We read the book Lion Dancer and made paper lanterns to hang in the classroom.

Last week we collected a few dollars from each child so that we could have a Chinese Banquet in the afternoon. While the kiddos were at lunch we ordered food and my incredible grade level partner ran out to go pick it up. I think we used the only Chinese restaurant that doesn't deliver in our area! We ordered: chicken lo mein, pork fried rice, egg rolls (we sliced into sections), chicken & broccoli, white rice and crispy noodles with duck sauce. Yummmm!
We decorated the room with red table cloths and of course the students' hanging lanterns. Each table setting included a placemat with the Chinese zodiac symbols, chopsticks, duck sauce and red & yellow tableware.
(sorry this is on its side)
You can pick up the placemat here at TPT!
We decided to put the food on the plates ahead of time so all the kiddos had to do was wash their hands and sit down.
It was so much fun watching the kids try to use chopsticks and sample the different foods. The winner (aside from the white rice) was the chicken lo mein! This was a fun experience and I can't wait to do it again next year.
Gung Hey Fat Choy,
Kristin
